I want to talk to you about 3 ways you can streamline your patient education. It saves you time, your staff time, helps your patients be educated on their own schedule, and also can help from a medical/legal perspective because you can have documentation that they actually watched the video (or whatever it was you required them to do in terms of education). You can just reinforce it in the office versus doing so much of that education right there. We all know that face-to-face is best, but we’re in a very mobile society. Patients want and demand some different ways of being educated. They want something that’s convenient for them.
I know of a staff member who’s going to be having surgery soon. I was just talking with her yesterday. One of her biggest frustrations is that she has to go into the physician’s office watch a DVD in the office before she has the surgery. She can sign her consents while she’s there, but there’s a better way to do that. It would be more convenient for her if she didn’t have to go in, and she’d be more happy and satisfied if she could view the DVD in the privacy of her own home. This is the society we’re in; a very mobile society. We need to participate in the ways people want to be educated. As we know they learn many ways but videos are a great way to do it.
One of the ways to do it is via on-line webinars. It’s great because you can teach people live or you can make it evergreen. It means they can access it when they want. You can give them access to do that. You can also include PDFs of written materials. There are so many ways for you to do this on-line. One of my favorite ways to do it is using a very simple application called Zoom. I’m not an affiliate. I just use it and I love it. I use it when I’m doing trainings and as I build up my membership site. I’ve done it for physicians as they do trainings and build membership sites for people to go in and access their education. It’s a great way for you to take everything you say all the time, put it into a presentation, and present that and know that the information your patients are getting is coming from you. Granted there are lots of trainings out there, and some of them are really great. You can include that in your membership site too if you want to. Or, you can use that with your live training. There’s so many creative ways to do it. Patients can be interacting with you on the webinar. You can do it live or as an evergreen for them to see on their membership site. We use it for fitness videos and testimonials for bonus motivation. We do so much stuff on our membership site. Patients love it! They can do it at their leisure. If they want to do some things live, we make that opportunity available to them every week as well. On-line webinars is a great way to streamline patient education. It takes things that you do over and over again, and it systematizes it. We all know that when you have systems in place it does a lot of things. Number one, it makes for a very consistent patient experience. Number two, it saves time (in the long run).
The other thing is publishing. I know I’ve mentioned it. I’m a publisher. If you have things you do a lot, you can put it into cost effective pamphlets and books. It’s never been easier to get those printed at a very affordable price. You can do it on Amazon; you can utilize some on-line printing services, vista print, and more. There’s very little that you can’t create on your own anymore and get published and put together. For true publishing there is a lot of moving parts that can be hard to keep track of. But if you have the information created they have tutorials and that sort of thing. You can assign it to one of your staff members, or I can help guide you through that. There are so many ways you can publish your materials and have that readily available in your office to give to your patients branded to you. So that’s another great way to streamline your patient education and keep your name out there with all those materials you send them.
The other thing you can do is virtual training. It’s like a webinar but more of a true training where you train on a regular basis. You do that to keep it fresh. I’ve done it for weight loss in a number of different ways. I’m actually starting to do that for Weight Loss Practice Builder. I have trainings and membership sorts of things that the physician or their staff can use. That’s another way you can streamline your patient education.
Those are my top 3. I don’t want to use up a lot of your time. I wanted to share that with you and get you thinking about it. Realize how much it could help you in your practice and also your staff with saving time and systematizing things.
The three ways, once again were: webinars, publishing and virtual training in a membership site.
Reach out to me and let me know if there’s something else you want me to cover. I love everything about practice management. I’ve done it literally for 20 years. I’m in the trenches. I still manage a practice today. I love helping physicians optimize their practice and gain more revenue and systematize things.
