7 Ways to Create a Competitive Edge for Your Weight Loss Practice

Sep 11, 2024

In a competitive industry such as medical and surgical weight loss, it's crucial to stand out by having marketing initiatives in place that your competitors might not be willing or have the time to do. It’s having a strategic plan that sets you apart, showcases your expertise, and offer something fresh, unique, and helpful to current and potential new patients.

Here are seven ways to create such a competitive edge for your weight loss practice:

  1.  Create an Online Course

Creating an online course is one of the best ways to leverage your expertise. While it requires careful planning and strategy, an online course can serve as an asset for your practice. It offers an opportunity for recurring revenue while also reinforcing what you teach your patients daily.

This is particularly effective for those in niche areas, as it allows you to meet the growing demand for your services.

One example comes from a client I’m working with who’s creating an online course to serve the overflow of patient referrals she receives. This course will not only generate additional income but will also help her patients follow through on the principles she teaches and allow her to reach markets that she otherwise may not have been able to reach.

  1.  Start a YouTube Channel or Vlog

If you're looking to connect with a wider audience, starting a YouTube channel or vlog (video blog) is an excellent strategy. Video content allows you to present valuable information that people are already searching for. Many potential patients will watch your videos and walk into your office feeling like they already know you and your team.

A well-established YouTube channel can provide educational content for both current and prospective patients, showcasing your expertise and building trust before they even step through your door.

  1.  Consistently Share Your Expertise

Consistency is key in building trust and positioning yourself as a thought leader. Whether it's through a blog, vlog, or Q&A series, regularly sharing valuable advice helps you connect with people. Focus on topics relevant to the patients you want to attract and answer the questions they’re already asking.

To keep things simple, you don’t need to be active on every platform. Pick one—be it Instagram, Facebook, or YouTube—and consistently post strategic content. Involving your team in the content creation process can also ease the workload and make it more enjoyable.

  1.  Write a Book or Shook (Short Book)

Writing a book or "Shook" (a short book) is an effective way to share your knowledge, gain credibility, and grow your practice. Publishing a book highlights your expertise and allows you to offer value to both current patients and your colleagues.

I’ve helped numerous practitioners, including my husband, Dr. Thomas W. Clark publish books that have been instrumental in expanding their practices. Whether it’s a full-length book or a smaller eBook, this is a great way to share valuable insights, attract attention, and position yourself as an industry leader.

  1.  Create Free Giveaways

Free resources, such as guides or checklists, are an excellent way to attract potential patients. Offering free giveaways related to weight loss, hormone replacement therapy, or nutritional plans not only builds trust but also expands your email list.

By offering something of value for free, you increase the likelihood of potential patients engaging with your practice. Once they access the free resource, they become part of your email list, allowing you to communicate with them regularly and build a relationship.

  1.  Start a Podcast

Podcasts are growing in popularity, and they’re an effective way to engage with your audience. A podcast allows you to discuss relevant topics in a more conversational format, which can appeal to listeners who prefer audio content.

We’ve seen success in our own practice, where patients often listen to our podcast while exercising. It’s an excellent way to keep your message in front of your audience, provide valuable insights, and foster a deeper connection.  In fact, I use it in my consulting business. My podcast is called Bariatric Business Accelerator and is available on all podcasting platforms.

  1.  Stop Doing What Isn’t Working

Lastly, one of the most important strategies is to stop doing what isn’t bringing results. Instead, try something new, measure its impact, and adjust as needed. If you’ve been doing the same thing and not seeing growth, it’s time to shift gears. Experimenting with fresh ideas, like the strategies above, can open new opportunities and help you discover what resonates best with your audience.

Tips for Success:

  • Keep it simple: Focus on delivery methods you enjoy.
  • Be consistent and authentic: Consistency builds trust, and authenticity helps you connect with your audience.
  • Leverage your team: Involving your team in content creation can help streamline the process.
  • Monitor your results: Keep track of what’s working and what’s not, and adjust accordingly.

These seven strategies not only give you a competitive edge but also help you attract the right patients, expand your reach, and build a lasting presence in the weight loss industry.

Implementing these ideas may require effort, but the results can be transformative for your practice.
