The Biggest Goal-Setting Mistakes in Weight Loss Practices and How to Avoid Them

Nov 11, 2024

Goal-setting doesn’t have to be complicated, but it does require intention.

Setting meaningful goals for your weight loss practice can transform your work, your patients’ experiences, and your business growth. However, as many of us have seen, even the best-intentioned goals can fall short.

In this blog, we’ll review some common goal-setting mistakes and actionable tips to make sure you’re creating goals that lead to real impact. Let’s dive in.

  1.  Not Setting Goals – Or Letting Them Gather Dust

The first mistake is skipping goal-setting entirely. Often, you can get caught up in the day-to-day and may not intentionally set goals to help advance your practice. Or, taking the time to establish goals and then letting them sit in a file or tucked away in a drawer which won’t do you any good. Instead, create goals with your team that serve as your roadmap and bring them out regularly to measure and review progress.

Action Tip: Define specific goals for your practice, and schedule regular check-ins—at least quarterly or even better – monthly.  Review and adjust them as needed.

  1.  Setting Goals Based Upon Your Competitors

We’ve all felt the urge to mimic what others are doing—seeing a competitor’s success and thinking, “I should do that too!” But goals that are meaningful to you will keep you motivated and ensure that your practice aligns with what you truly value. Just as you encourage your patients to focus on their own health journey rather than comparing themselves to others, you should do the same in your professional goals.

Action Tip: Reflect on what’s most important to you and your practice. Align your goals with what will bring you personal satisfaction and long-term success, not just what others are doing.

  1.  Not Involving Your Team in Goal-Setting

As practice leaders, it can be easy to set goals solo, but engaging your team in this process is crucial. Team involvement brings fresh ideas, boosts buy-in, and empowers them to contribute to the practice’s success. Whether it’s your office manager, partners, or staff members, include everyone in brainstorming and planning so they feel part of the journey.

Action Tip: Before your planning meeting, ask your team to bring their recommended goals and strategies. This doesn’t have to be a half-day retreat; a well-planned, focused meeting can be just as powerful.

  1.  Lacking an Action Plan for Your Goals

Goals without an action plan are simply wishes. Without a clear plan, it’s challenging to prioritize and make progress. I like to create annual goals (that align with my vision and are strategic) and then break them down by quarter. If planning a whole year feels daunting, try setting shorter 12-week goals. The book The 12 Week Year is a great resource that encourages this approach.

Action Tip: Set a few core actions for each goal. This helps you prioritize and provides a clear pathway to follow, creating momentum that keeps your practice moving forward.

  1.  Ignoring Metrics and Progress Tracking

Metrics are essential. Without them, it’s hard to know if you’re making headway toward your goals. Not only should you track metrics, but also communicate them with your team. When team members understand how their efforts contribute to the bigger picture, motivation, and alignment improve significantly.  Not to mention actual goal attainment.

Action Tip: Create clear metrics for each goal. Track these weekly or monthly and use the data to make any necessary modifications in your strategy or action plan.

  1.  Failing to Adapt and Embrace New Opportunities

These past few years, many practices had to pivot and innovate. For example, digital patient engagement became a game-changer throughout the pandemic. We expanded our online resources and created a streamlined communication system that allowed us to maintain connection and continuity with our patients. Whether it’s virtual consultations or online sales, embracing new avenues that align with patient needs can lead to unexpected growth.

Action Tip: Take a moment to consider which of your systems are working well and which need updating. Explore ways to enhance patient interaction and service delivery, both in-person and online.
